The Husqvarna Wooden Sledge Axe is an ideal tool if you need to split a lot of wood, but don?t want the extra length of a sole-purpose splitting maul. It can be used in a variety of ways: as a traditional axe, for splitting wood, even the heavier and larger chunks of wood, and can also double as a sledge-hammer.
The hardened striking face opposite the axe?s cutting blade is designed for use as a sledge-hammer, and can take a fair amount of force, and it can also be used to seat wedges while cutting down trees, and in other tasks where wedge placement is key.
The head is attached very securely to the handle using both wooden and metal pegs that are designed to fit tightly without loosening over time and with use. The sturdy straight wooden handle is made from specially tempered hickory wood, and runs about 80 centimetres: allowing plenty of room for a comfortable double-sided grip while not being so long that you risk losing control of your swing or of the wood that you are splitting.
The whole axe weighs about 2.5 kilograms and is beautifully balanced, feeling comfortable and responsive, with much of the weight in the head for ease of use. There are some tasks where a slightly heavier axe comes in handy, and this is the axe for those jobs, biting in when lighter or less-well-balanced axes might bounce off the surface.
The Husqvarna Wooden Sledge Axe comes with a leather edge-covering which can (and should) be used for maximum safety whenever not in use. Train yourself to replace the edge covering when the axe is not in use and, likewise, remember to remove the covering before getting ready to use the axe. It could damage the axe edge if the tool is used with guard still in place ? and it almost certainly will damage the guard, especially if it happens too often!
NOTE! Only sledge axes can withstand use as a sledgehammer.
